Local shops vs. hypermarkets: what future for our cities ?

Maxime Perrin

A few decades ago, our cities were bustling with small local shops: the grocer, the cheesemonger, the butcher... Then, hypermarkets appeared on the peripheries, with their huge car parks and attractive prices.Shopping centers flourished, attracting crowds on weekends. But today, a new trend is emerging: the return of local shops, in more compact formats adapted to urban living.

So, what is the future of Retail ?

The past : the era of hypermarkets

The 1960s and 1970s saw the rise of the individual car, which favored the establishment of hypermarkets outside city centers.

These stores offered a wide selection of products and competitive prices, which appealed to many consumers. Shopping centers have become places of leisure, where people spent part of the day on weekends.

The present : the return of convenience stores

Today, mentalities are changing. More and more people want to consume local, support small businesses and find a neighborhood atmosphere. Hypermarkets are sometimes perceived as impersonal and standardized.Local shops are making a comeback, with formats adapted to the constraints of urban housing. We even see big brands like #LeroyMerlin or #Ikea offering smaller stores, on several floors, in the city center.

Future trends: towards a hybrid trade ?

How can we imagine the trade of tomorrow? Probably a mix of different models. Hypermarkets will continue to exist for major purchases, but local shops will play an increasing role in daily life.Consumers will be more and more attentive to the quality of products, their origin and the environmental impact of their consumption. Digital will also play an important role, with the development of online commerce and home delivery services.

And you, are you more hypermarkets or convenience stores ?
