Caddie: Brand or Product ?

Maxime Perrin

In the world of shopping trolleys and baskets, a common confusion persists: Caddie is often used as a generic name to refer to any trolley. However, it is actually a specific brand that has now disappeared.

Antonomasia: a figure of speech in which a proper name is used to replace a common noun. A brand name like "Caddie" can then replace the name of an object, "shopping trolley."

Caddie: a historic brand

Founded in 1928, the company Caddie revolutionized the world of commerce by inventing the stackable shopping trolley in 1957. This cart, named Caddie, was immensely successful and became a reference in stores worldwide.

The correct term: shopping trolley

While Caddie made a significant mark in the history of shopping trolleys, it is important to remember that the correct term for this type of product is "shopping trolley."

The company Caddie today

Unfortunately, after years of financial difficulties, the company Caddie was liquidated in 2024. The brand has disappeared, but its legacy endures: shopping trolleys continue to be called "caddies" by many people.

At Cart City, we are passionate about shopping carts and baskets.

We offer a wide range of quality products, available on the market for decades.

In conclusion, although the name "Caddie" is often used incorrectly, it is important to remember that it is a brand and the correct term is "shopping trolley."
